We often view physical places and their associated cultures as static and unchangeable. People move to specific locations—like San Francisco for its open-minded culture and thriving AI scene, Berlin for its open-source hacker community, or Asia to be part of its rapid ascent—based on the established characteristics of these places. We accept these cultural and geographical features as fixed, external realities that we must navigate, making choices between them with an understanding of their trade-offs. But what if this paradigm could shift? What if online communities, formed around shared goals and values, could manifest in the physical world, leading to the creation of new, intentional physical places rather than those arising from historical happenstance? This concept isn't new; it has been explored in various philosophical discussions over the years. In 1988, French sociologist Michel Maffesoli proposed in The Time of the Tribes that the future would see groups defined more by shared interests than by traditional bonds of history or geography. More recently, Balaji Srinivasan's The Network State suggests that online communities could evolve from virtual discussion forums into physical hubs over time. Similarly, David de Ugarte’s concept of Phyles advocates for cultural and economic cooperation among transnational groups, coordinating both online and offline. As a member of the crypto community, I find this space to be a fascinating lens through which to explore these ideas. While crypto is often seen as a tech-driven industry—relying on sophisticated software, mathematics like blockchains, and zero-knowledge proofs—it's also a space where virtual interactions have the potential to transcend the digital realm and influence the creation of new, intentional communities in the physical world. This duality makes the crypto space a unique vantage point for considering how our understanding of place and community might evolve in the future.
